Not necessarily. Your Village Dental dentist's goal is to save the tooth whenever possible — root canal therapy, splinting, and reattachment are often options. Extraction is the last resort, not the first.

Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. Do not scrub it. If it is clean, place it gently back in the socket and bite on a cloth; if you cannot, keep it in milk or in your own saliva and come straight in. The first 30 minutes matter more than anything else that happens afterwards. Baby teeth are never replanted — bring your child in, but do not push the tooth back.
Call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if facial swelling is closing your eye, affecting your breathing or swallowing, or is spreading down the neck; if bleeding will not stop after 30 minutes of firm pressure; or if the injury involved a suspected broken jaw or loss of consciousness. It is urgent enough to be seen within a few days. An exposed tooth loses structure quickly and the neighbouring teeth start to drift, which can mean the original crown no longer fits. Keep the crown and bring it with you — it can often be recemented.
